Yes, I know you would like to design your site and
have it completed before 5:00 today. Well, that's not going to happen, so
slow down and do it right the first time.
Before beginning to design a web page you need to
consider the overall design.
- What is your main theme?
- Who is the site targeted to?
- What will the site say?
- What pages will link to what pages?
If you don't do some paper and pencil work first,
you will find yourself redoing much of what you design. Sit down and answer
the questions below.
1. Decide on your Purpose.
Why are you designing this site? Make it a beneficial addition to
the internet. The web does not need another useless site.
2. Who is your audience? Is this
site to help others? Will you be selling a product?
3. Layout a few pages. Using paper
and pencil, jot down the information you will include on 4-5 pages. This
organization will help you realize how your pages will interact--what will
link to what.
4. Organization. Do you want people
to go through your site in a particular direction or do you want them to
access all your information from your homepage?
5. Consider a consistent way of naming your
pages. Files should be named clearly and short, this will make the
pages easy to identify when creating links. This will help you in the
future.

Before you begin, create a central folder or
directory to hold all materials for your website. This folder will contain
HTML documents, images, and external files.
